“We can’t win at somebody else’s expense. We can only fully be satisfied when the other person’s needs are fulfilled as well as our own.” – Marshall Rosenberg

How can we make decisions that care for our needs while also considering the needs, perspectives, and impacts of others?
In this course, Miki Kashtan explores decision-making through the lens of Nonviolent Communication, offering practical approaches for moving beyond either/or thinking, control, and compromise toward greater collaboration and integration.
The course moves from internal decision-making to collaboration with others, children, groups, and organizations, introducing tools and processes that can support more inclusive and needs-based decisions.

Session 1: The Basics of Decisions That Work for Everyone
An introduction to the foundations of nonviolent decision-making. Explore why decision-making can be so challenging, how either/or thinking and power differences shape our choices, and what it means to look for solutions that care for everyone involved.

Session 2: Self-Integration – The Art of Internal Collaboration
Explore how to work with the different voices and needs within ourselves when facing a difficult decision. Miki introduces the Self-Integration process developed by Inbal Kashtan as a way to listen with empathy to all the parts of ourselves and move toward decisions that honor what matters most.

Session 3: From Conflict to Dilemma – The Art of Collaborative Dialogue
Learn how dialogue can help us move through disagreement and conflict. This session explores speaking truth with care, listening with curiosity, identifying needs and impacts, and finding creative ways forward together.

Session 4: Making Decisions with Children Instead of for Them
Explore what it means to include children in decision-making, even when significant power differences are present. The session looks at trust, agreements, expressing adult needs, making space for “no,” and moving away from force toward cooperation.

Session 5: Collaborating for a Shared Purpose
How can collaborative decision-making work in workplaces, communities, and other organizations? Explore the role of leadership, power, participation, efficiency, and systems that make it possible for people to bring their needs, perspectives, and concerns into the decision-making process.

Session 6: Decision-Making Tools and Processes
An introduction to practical tools and processes that can support collaboration in groups and organizations, including the Decision-Making Matrix, Advice Process, and Convergent Facilitation. The course concludes by expanding the vision toward possibilities for collaboration from the local to the global level.
